Op het Viva-boekentopic is het idee ontstaan voor een soort forumleesclub. Elke maand wordt er een boek gelezen en dit boek wordt daarna gezamenlijk besproken.
Elke maand kiest een andere forummer de 4 boeken uit en zorgt voor de te bespreken vragen.
Tot en met zondag 30 juni kan er gestemd worden.
Op woensdag 30 juli van 20:00 - 22:00 worden de vragen gesteld en kan er direct gereageerd worden op elkaar.
Voor mensen die hier niet bij kunnen of willen zijn staat het natuurlijk vrij om achteraf nog te reageren.

Wat tonkje zegt vind ik ook, dat het zo directer is tussen Charlie en de lezer. Je bent je er ook gelijk van bewust dat Charlie issues heeft.
Het format vond ik soms wel ongeloofwaardig, als er bijvoorbeeld naar een bepaald moment werd toegewerkt, dan zag je de planning van het verhaal en dat zou je in echte brieven zeer waarschijnlijk niet zo doen.
Wat Tonks zegt vind ik ook een goede observatie, dat je in een brief precies onthult wat je wilt laten zien - en dus verbergt wat je niet wilt laten zien.

Wat tonkje zegt vind ik ook, dat het zo directer is tussen Charlie en de lezer. Je bent je er ook gelijk van bewust dat Charlie issues heeft.

After watching an art film with Mary Elizabeth Charlie says: “The movie itself was very interesting, but I didn’t think it was very good because I didn’t really feel different when it was over.” (p. 124) Do you agree with Charlie that in order to be “good,” creative works must make you feel differently? How did you feel after reading The Perks of Being a Wallflower?
Anyway, Mary Elizabeth and I went to see a movie downtown. It was what they call an “art” movie. Mary Elizabeth said it won an award at some big film festival in Europe, and she thought that was impressive. As we waited for the movie to start, she said what a shame it was that so many people would go to see a stupid Hollywood movie, but there were only a few people in this theater. Then, she talked about how she couldn’t wait to get out of here and go to college where people appreciate things like that.Then the movie started. It was in a foreign language and had subtitles, which was fun because I had never read a movie before. {{{The movie itself was very interesting, but I didn’t think it was very good because I didn’t really feel different when it was over. }}} But Mary Elizabeth felt different. En mijn persoonlijke vraag: hoe zat het nou met die tante? Het beeld vanuit de film was heel anders voor mij dan het beeld uit het boek en ik vraag me af of ik het nou wel goed begrepen heb.

3. Who did you identify with the most? Did you see parts of yourself in any one specific character?
Of gewoon wie vond je het leukst?
Ik kon me niet echt identificeren met de karakters. Dat komt doordat Charlie voor mij niet heel dicht bij mezelf komt, en de andere karakters zie je alleen door zijn ogen. Zijn vader vond ik het meest sympathiek, heel rustig en betrokken. De leraar Engels vond ik ook aardig, maar in het boek bleef dat een beetje een flat character.

Ik vind het moeilijk om me een voorstelling te maken van Charlie, want alle innerlijke dialoog hoor je dan niet dus dan blijft er volgens mij erg weinig opvallends over. Ik kan het altijd wel vinden met introverte mensen, maar Charlie lijkt me iemand die erg moeilijk contact maakt en zichzelf nauwelijks laat zien. Dat lijkt me een moeilijke basis voor vriendschap. Patrick is heel uitgelaten en open en dat maakt het mogelijk dat hij contact krijgt met Charlie.

Hij werd toch gepest/genegeerd in middle school? Daarnaast had hij psychische problemen en is hij een tijdje opgenomen geweest. Ik denk dat hij sowieso nog moest wennen aan het dagelijks leven, een nieuwe fase op school is voor iedereen spannend dus voor iemand zo teruggetrokken als Charlie helemaal.
Ik herken het wel: kat uit de boom kijken, observeren, pas mee willen doen als je erop kan vertrouwen dat het goed gaat. Ik denk dat Charlie er niet op vertrouwt dat het geaccepteerd zal worden als hij gaat 'participeren'.
Of gewoon wie vond je het leukst?
Ik kon me niet echt identificeren met de karakters. Dat komt doordat Charlie voor mij niet heel dicht bij mezelf komt, en de andere karakters zie je alleen door zijn ogen. Zijn vader vond ik het meest sympathiek, heel rustig en betrokken. De leraar Engels vond ik ook aardig, maar in het boek bleef dat een beetje een flat character.

Ik vind het moeilijk om me een voorstelling te maken van Charlie, want alle innerlijke dialoog hoor je dan niet dus dan blijft er volgens mij erg weinig opvallends over. Ik kan het altijd wel vinden met introverte mensen, maar Charlie lijkt me iemand die erg moeilijk contact maakt en zichzelf nauwelijks laat zien. Dat lijkt me een moeilijke basis voor vriendschap. Patrick is heel uitgelaten en open en dat maakt het mogelijk dat hij contact krijgt met Charlie.
5. What do you think kept Charlie from “participating” when he entered high school? What held him back? Have you ever felt this way before?
Hij werd toch gepest/genegeerd in middle school? Daarnaast had hij psychische problemen en is hij een tijdje opgenomen geweest. Ik denk dat hij sowieso nog moest wennen aan het dagelijks leven, een nieuwe fase op school is voor iedereen spannend dus voor iemand zo teruggetrokken als Charlie helemaal.
Ik herken het wel: kat uit de boom kijken, observeren, pas mee willen doen als je erop kan vertrouwen dat het goed gaat. Ik denk dat Charlie er niet op vertrouwt dat het geaccepteerd zal worden als hij gaat 'participeren'.

Hm, geen idee. Hij laat niet echt mensen dichtbij genoeg om een bondgenoot te kunnen zijn. Ik denk dat Sam het dichtst in de buurt komt omdat zij hem, deels onbewust, motiveert om zichzelf meer te laten zien.
En slechtste invloed... hij heeft heel veel mensen om zich heen die het goed met hem voor hebben. Ik denk dat zijn verleden hem dwarszit, niet een bepaald persoon in het heden.
7. From Naked Lunch by William S. Burroughs to Harold and Maude to The Beatles’ song “Dear Prudence,” Charlie references numerous pieces of literature, film, and music. How did these references shape your reading? Why are they so important to Charlie?
Ik vond het leuke details, ze gaven het verhaal wat extra's omdat je de muziek, films en boeken ook zelf kunt bekijken, dat maakt het echter.
Ik denk dat ze voor Charlie een veilige manier waren om in contact te komen met anderen, om zich niet alleen te voelen. Eerst alleen hijzelf en de muziek/boeken, later samen met Sam en Patrick, waarbij het delen van de ervaring ze dichter bij elkaar brengt (de scène in de truck in de tunnel).
8. When Bill invites Charlie over for lunch Charlie observes, “He was talking for real. It was strange.” (p. 181) What do you think Charlie means by “real”? How does he discern between what is real and what is not real?
For real = serieus, belangrijk gesprek direct tegen Charlie. Ik denk dat Charlie verbaasd is dat iemand op deze manier aandacht aan hem besteedt.

Sam confronts Charlie before she leaves for college, pleading: “You can’t just sit there and put everybody’s lives ahead of yours and think that counts as love.You just can’t.You have to do things.” (p. 200) Do you agree with Sam? How does this exchange relate to their relationship on a grander scale?
Ja eens. Het lijkt me vreselijk irritant om in een relatie te zitten met iemand die zich de hele tijd naar mij voegt. Je wilt een gelijkwaardige vriend, geen bediende.

Ja ik was wel verrast, had het niet zien aankomen alhoewel het wel duidelijk was dat er íets met Charlie was gebeurd. Ik vond het goed hoe verwarrend en conflicterend zijn gevoelens voor de tante waren. Aan de ene kant serieuze psychische problemen door het misbruiktrauma (stemmingen, black-outs, agressieve explosies), aan de andere kant de goede herinneringen, genegenheid, en schuldgevoel om haar dood. Zij was zelf tegelijk slachtoffer en dader en toch werden er vrij weinig woorden aan vuil gemaakt, dat maakte dit onderdeel van Charlies leven voor mij juist realistisch want ik denk dat het in het echt ook heel verwarrend is en er veel onbesproken blijft.

After watching an art film with Mary Elizabeth Charlie says: “The movie itself was very interesting, but I didn’t think it was very good because I didn’t really feel different when it was over.” (p. 124) Do you agree with Charlie that in order to be “good,” creative works must make you feel differently? How did you feel after reading The Perks of Being a Wallflower?
Niet eens, het hoeft niet altijd op gevoel te spelen. Maar ja, goede kunst moet wel iets doen, of dat nu ontroeren of verwarren is, inzicht geven of aan het denken zetten. Alleen vermaak is leuk maar niet per se goed.
Maar: wat bij de één een heftige emotie oproept doet een ander niets. Dus hoe bepaal je dan wat goed is?

Tja, een beetje een nietszeggende opmerking met dat 'sometimes'. Hoe het zich verhoud tot Charlies ontwikkeling zou ik zo niet weten. Ja, hij laat zichzelf meer zien en horen, op het allerlaatst, maar ik had niet de indruk dat hij in het begin erg bezig was met andermans perspectief, hij zat juist erg in zijn eigen wereldje. In deze vraag lijkt het of die twee dingen tegenover elkaar staan, maar volgens mij is dat niet zo.
13. The Perks of Being a Wallflower grapples with a complex, universally difficult stage of life. What reflections did it inspire about your own life? What parts of the story resonated most deeply with you?
Dit boek was voor mij geen aanleiding om het op mijn eigen leven te betrekken. Ik kom wel in contact met jongeren in deze levensfase, maar die zijn meestal nog niet zo wereldwijs/welbespraakt als de personages in dit boek. Dat maakte het voor mij ook wat minde realistisch.
En mijn persoonlijke vraag: hoe zat het nou met die tante? Het beeld vanuit de film was heel anders voor mij dan het beeld uit het boek en ik vraag me af of ik het nou wel goed begrepen heb.
Wat ik ervan begreep: tante was vroeger misbruikt en daardoor een beetje de weg kwijt. Opgevangen door haar zus/Charlies moeder waarbij ze een speciale band opbouwt met Charlie maar hem ook misbruikt. Zij gaf hem ook extra aandacht en cadeautjes en hierdoor voelde Charlie zich schuldig aan haar dood, waardoor hij eigenlijk twee trauma's bovenop elkaar had.
Dit haalde ik uit het boek, al werd dat pas op het allerlaatst duidelijk. In de film werd er wat gelijkmatiger naartoe gewerkt en werd het explicieter gezegd.

Het stukje over het misbruik van Charlie door zijn tante moest ik 2x lezen. Zo kort en met weinig woorden wordt het verteld.
Maar het is dan ook iets wat hij heel ver had weggestopt. Dus logisch dat hij er niet ineens bladzijden aan gaat wijden.

Hi allemaal,
Ik zal proberen ook wat antwoorden neer te zetten, kan helaas niet allemaal vanavond..
1) ik vond de briefvorm wel interessant. Voor mij was het alsof hij(Charlie) alles aan mij persoonlijk wilde vertellen. Dat maakte dat ik vrijwel direct in het verhaal werd gezogen.
2) ik denk niet dat het iemand is die hij nauwelijks kent. Het is iemand die hij vertrouwt. Iemand met wie hij zijn gedachtes wil delen. Dat doet hij op school nauwelijks (niet). Zou het iemand kunnen zijn van middle school?
